Gemstone Material

A 1 carat ruby is smaller than a 1 carat emerald. This is mainly the buds specific weight. A density-level gems can be strengthened, although it has smaller size than other gemstones with the same carat weight. While carat weight is important for traditional precious stones and much appreciated, it tends to lose its importance when it comes to precious stones with high common supplies such as blue topaz, citrine and amethyst. Amethystbe used in fact to be considered one of the gems, but its price went down when the game loads from Brazil in the 19th Century has arrived.

Gem Shape or Cut

The shape and can occasionally cut the carat weight. While most gemstone jewelry designers cut sizes and carat weight spirit, instead of more value than their aesthetic value and can therefore reduce the carat weight and size for a better look. The same can be said to form
as well.

Table Diameter

The diameter of the table is often as important for measuring and evaluating the brightness of a particular gem, but what few people realize is that they affect the carat gem weight.

gemstone cutting and shape similar to the diameter table has the form of ownership so as to maximize the windows, carat could be sacrificed.

Today, studies show that a lot of gems to be soldto take into> consideration cut commercial interests in. Many of these precious stones report the weight loss of only 10% or less. Some are even well cut to the point that makes them appear larger.

Strip thickness

The belt is the dividing line between a pavilion and crown jewels or aspects above and below. Ideally speaking, must be extremely thin panty and preferably only visible to the naked eye as a line of light. thick belt, not only reduce shine and lightYield, but negative effects on color and precious stones. Sheaths are often referred to as edges and ranked as one of the following: very thin, thin, medium, thick, thick and very thick. sheaths thin look better, but are lighter and easier to chip.

Crown height

The crown jewel is referring to his upper region and position on the tape. height of the crown jewels is acceptable from 11.0 to 16.2% of the diameter of the belt. Greater heights with crown oftenmeans the more carat weight.

Pavilion Bulge

The pavilion is the bottom of a faceted stone. swelling greater carat weight usually means heavier.

Culet Size

This looks like a valuable point. As the belts are better Culet invisible to the naked eye. It may be pointed or sharp.

The most cherished jewelry is that which is both beautiful and also uniquely personal to the individual wearing it.

The use of cultural symbols in jewelry can create this special combination of beauty and meaning. Jewelry with Roman numerals, in particular, can keep close a memory of the special times and people in your life.

Roman numerals are a numbering system originating in ancient Rome based on seven letters given values as numbers. Any number can be created with a combination of these seven letters. Roman numerals continue to be popular today to give extra gravity to a number or date.

Romanesque symbolism has a strong, bold feel about it. It speaks of tradition and things that last, surviving the test of time. Roman numerals are classic, timeless, steadfast, enduring.

The clean, straight lines of Roman numerals create an elegant and appealing design all on their own. They convey a sureness and confidence that, when combined with their meaning, creates a deeply personal piece of jewelry.

Roman numeral jewelry helps us embrace moments in time – birth, graduation, first date, engagement, marriage, and other special memories. It can celebrate either a beginning or a culmination. As a gift, it can be a wonderful and special way to communicate your feelings about another. Or, as a gift to yourself, it can be a reminder of a goal achieved or a day that changed your course.

Whether a Roman numeral ring, pendant, bracelet or charm, date jewelry allows the wearer to hold a personal moment close. The special date is always with you, but you choose whether to share its meaning. It can be an open and public statement or a very private memory that only you, and possibly one other, knows the meaning of.

With a simple numeral, you can create a piece of unique jewelry that carries hidden meaning discreetly through time.

A wedding proposal is in your mind right now because you just want to settle down to be with the woman of your dreams. You have already planned for the perfect date and setting for your wedding proposal but you just haven’t bought an engagement ring yet simply because there are too many choices in the market and you don’t know what to pick. What you need to do is to ponder on that thought for a minute and think about your girlfriend. Imagine her wearing the emerald cut engagement ring that you carefully picked for her. Wouldn’t it look nice?

Looking for a ring for engagement is naturally difficult and crucial at the same time. Admit it or not, the answer of a woman sometimes depends on whether the ring just fits her taste or not. Some would sometimes hesitate to say yes simply because of the kind of ring that you are giving her. Engagement rings come in different designs, style and cuts of the stones which are usually diamonds. Still, women can’t get away from the traditional thinking that diamonds are strong and durable thus it just stays forever. When talking about rings, most women prefer emerald cut engagement rings.

Emerald cut engagement rings are most loved by women because of its traditional look yet classy. Women may go for fashionable and trendy clothes and accessories but for rings, most women still prefer the look that also brings the old memories back to them. Because emerald cut engagement rings define classic and style, women believe that the memories that they share and will be shared through time will be preserved in the ring. Also, because of the rectangular shape of the stone with just cropped corners, the engagement ring with this cut would look good on the finger of the woman. It just slips through the fingers and because women’s fingers look slim and shapely, this cut would be the best one for them.

Apart from the look, buying this cut would also be a good buy for the men. Things nowadays are not doing so well that we have to learn how to tighten and belts. Some people might argue that this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and watching your budget is not a good idea as it would spoil the moment. But, let’s face it; unless you have a very large bank account, spending excessively on these things would only lead you to debts and worse losing the girl of your dreams because you can’t support her anymore. Thus, emerald cut engagement rings are the best buys for men and women of these days. It has an elegant and classy look but it suits the budgeted pocket right. You wouldn’t have to worry about debts plus, you are financially secured to settle down and have a family of your own.

One of the first decisions that every couple will make when they decide to marry is what type of wedding and engagement rings they will choose to commemorate the most important day in their lives and show their love for each other. Jewelry stores have a large selection of beautiful jewelry that all looks the same, but with large price variations. The salesmen are happy to explain the 4C’s of diamond quality to you, but the subject can be very confusing. Many jewelers will concentrate on Color and Clarity, but that is not the whole story.

To the untrained eye, most diamonds look alike. “They look white and sparkle – right?” So you ask yourself, ” Why should I spend several thousand dollars for this diamond from you, when The Super Duper Discount Diamond Emporium, just down the road (or over on that other URL), will sell me a “Bigger Diamond” for less than $400.00?” The answer to this common questions lies in the quality of the diamonds that you are comparing.

Diamond price is determined by four factors: the Color of the diamond, the Cut of the diamond, the Clarity of the diamond, and the Caret weight of the diamond. These four factors are commonly referred to by jewelers as the “Four C’s.”

Of these four, the easiest one to understand is Caret Weight. For centuries the tiny seeds of the Carob tree were used to weigh all gemstones because their weight and size were consistent. The word Carat was derived from these seeds. Over time the Carat was standardized on the metric scale. Gemstone weights are expressed in metric carats (ct.) and are weighed to a thousandth (0.001) of a carat and then rounded off to the nearest hundredth (called a point). One carat equals .200 grams (200 milligrams), just over seven thousandths of an ounce. An ounce contains almost 142 carats. All diamonds are rare and large diamonds are not as common as small diamonds. So one would expect to see the higher value placed on the larger diamond. A big diamond at a low price may sound great, but size alone does not tell the entire story.

Diamonds come in a rainbow of many different colors. These colors include colorless, yellow, brown, red, green, blue and black. Some of these colors are extremely rare (red, green, blue) and others are more common (colorless, yellow, brown, black). The darker brown and black colors are the most common and for many years were considered only suitable for industrial uses. In the last few years these darker colors are starting to appear in jewelry. They are sometimes marketed as “champagne” and “black diamonds”. Most of the diamonds used in jewelry sold in the United States fall into the colorless to near colorless classification. The colorless diamond is the most highly valued, with the value of the diamond decreasing with increasing yellowness. Again, color does not tell the whole story when it comes to quality.

Clarity refers to flaws within the diamond. Diamonds are a product of nature and no two are identical. Some of the types of flaws commonly seen in diamonds include bubbles, crystals of other minerals, carbon grains, fractures or “feathers” (very tiny fractures that look like a feather). An internally flawless diamond is very valuable and the value of the diamond decreases with the total number and size of the flaws. Again, Clarity alone does not tell the whole story when it comes to diamond quality.

The Cut of the diamond does not refer to it’s shape, but rather how the angles of the tiny “facets” are cut and polished. The cut of the diamond is the only one of the four quality factors that is controllable by man and in my opinion the most important of all the quality factors. One of the primary reasons that people purchase diamonds is because of the sparkle. The idea is to trap as much of the light that enters the diamond as possible, bounce it around inside the diamond from one facet to another, and have as much of the light leave the diamond directly through the large flat facet on top of the diamond (the Table). This will make the diamond sparkle and how well the diamond sparkles is directly related to how well it is cut. We want diamonds to sparkle, so the more they sparkle – the more valuable they are. A poorly cut diamond will look dull or “dead”. Diamond cut is rated as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. For Round Brilliant and Princess shaped diamonds there is an additional rating of Ideal. Diamonds that have ratings of Very Good or better will have intense brilliance or sparkle. Fair to Poor diamonds will have very little sparkle or look like a piece of glass (dead).

All four of these factors affect the value of the diamond. To get the best “Bang for your Buck” start with Cut, then Color, then Clarity and finally caret weight. The shape of diamond that you choose will also affect how big it looks and will also affect the Color and Clarity somewhat. Oval and Marquise shapes look bigger than other diamond shapes with the same caret weight. Princess shape diamonds will look smaller than other diamonds with the same caret weight. The reason for this is total surface area of the top of the diamond versus the diamonds thickness. Oval and Marquise shapes have large top surface areas and are less thick than other stones. Princess shape diamonds are thicker and have small top surface areas.

Diamond shapes with corners (Princess, Emerald, Pear, Marquise, Trilliant) can sometimes have yellow flashes in the corners when the Color Grade is on the border line to the next lower color grade. This color shift is most noticed when the diamond is on the borderline of Near Colorless (J color) and Faint Yellow (K color) on the GIA Color Grade Scale.

Diamond shapes with large table areas, such as Emerald and Oval can also emphasize the Clarity of the stone. Small inclusions may be visible with these diamond shapes that would not be visible with other shapes. This only becomes a factor when the Clarity rating of the diamond is below SI2.

Diamonds can also be treated in various ways to improve their clarity and color. Their color can be changed with radiation and various substances can be injected into the diamond to fill cracks. An ethical jeweler will disclose any treatments that may have been done to the diamond. Treatment to improve the diamonds clarity or color greatly reduces the value of the diamond.

How do you know if you are getting a good deal or being ripped off? Ask for a GIA, AGS or EGL certificate. These certificates are available for diamonds of 0.4ct. and above and are issued by the Gemological Institute of America, the American Gem Society and the European Gemological Laboratory. These are independent gem testing laboratories and are the diamond jewelry industry accepted standard. When you compare the price of two diamonds always make certain that you are comparing equals. If the two certifications are essentially the same, the lowest price is the best deal.

How can a person possibly decide which shape they want their diamond to have? Today there are so many styles to choose from and if you can only have one it can be a difficult decision. Most people think that a diamond’s cut is referring to the way it is shaped, but actually it is referring to the artistry involved in giving it its shape.

If diamonds are cut incorrectly and the faceting is not perfectly symmetrical, it will be less brilliant in its reflection of light, thus diminishing its look and value.

The round shaped diamond has long been the most popular It is the most researched shape. Diamond cutters have experimented thoroughly with theories of light and mathematical calculations to obtain the most fire and brilliance from the round shape. Round diamonds are used in many different jewelry pieces. Small round diamonds are often used in pave, or bead settings. This means the diamonds are set in clusters or rows with almost no metal showing, giving the effect of a continuous stream of diamond.

The princess cut diamond is probably the second most popular shape. It is used widely for engagement rings. It has pointed corners and is usually square shaped, but can be rectangular. Princess cuts can vary in how square or rectangular they are. The emerald cut is a rectangular shape. It gets its unique appearance from rectangular facets. This will highlight the clarity of the diamond. The asscher cut is almost identical to the emerald cut, but it is square.

The marquise cut diamond is oval shaped, but pointed at the top and bottom. This cut can maximize the diamonds caret weight and make it appear larger. It is beautiful when set with round or marquise stones on either side. The brilliance of an oval shaped diamond is similar to a round shape. As with the marquise shape, the oval shape can accentuate long slender fingers giving an exceptional elegant look.

Radiant cut diamonds are a rounded square shape and have trimmed corners. These are popular for jewelry and also look very nice with side stones. The pear shaped or teardrop diamond has a single point on one end and is rounded on the other. This is a much used choice for a variety of jewelry pieces.

The heart shaped diamond has to be the ultimate representation of love. This is one diamonds shape that can speak for itself. The cushion shape or pillow cut diamond has been popular for more than a hundred years. Their rounded corners and larger facets give them lots of brilliance.

All diamonds have their own unique beauty and style, so pick the one that matches yours.

It is commonplace place these days for men to wear some jewelry as an accent to their clothing. Rings are the most popular type of men’s jewelry, followed by earrings or jewelry for body piercing and necklaces.

Men’s rings come in wide range of shapes and sizes. Most men’s rings are wider and bolder than women’s rings. The modern man may choose a ring made of titanium or stainless steel to really make a statement. Gold and Platinum are popular types of metal for more expensive men’s rings. Men’s rings are usually inscribed or molded with unusual decorations as well. There are some clubs which men belong to such as the Masons or the Elks that use rings with symbols on them to declare status or enrollment.

Jewelry for body piercing can be very simple or very bold. Most men will have a pierced ear with a simple gold or silver ring. There are also eyebrow rings, nose studs and rings, belly button rings and jewelry for other more risqué body piercing. The tendency for some men with piercing is to stretch the piercing so that they can insert jewelry with a bigger gauge and it looks bolder.

Men’s necklaces also come in many shapes and styles. Most men prefer to wear a necklace in dark or neutral colors that won’t stand out. Necklaces can be beaded or made of some natural substance like shells or glass. There are also gold and silver necklaces available for guys who want a little flash in their wardrobe.

Men’s jewelry is quickly growing in popularity and fashion. There are certainly other kinds of men’s jewelry beyond the types listed here and it’s available for any sense of style and taste a guy can come up with.

While most people think of gemstones as minerals, the fact is, they are not. Gemstones, by definition, are substances such as rocks (e.g. lapis lazuli or onyx), petrified substances such as amber (which is fossilized tree sap), minerals (diamonds or emeralds) and organically-grown substances (pearls or coral) that are either collectible (as in having or acquiring value) or used in jewelry.

Gemstones have traditionally been divided into precious (or ‘cardinal gems’) stones, classified as such through a combination of rarity, historical significance, or religious or ceremonial use, or semi-precious stones. Customarily, only five stones are called “precious” – diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and amethysts. In current usage, however, gemologists classify all stones as precious although – as George Orwell once put it, “some things are more equal than others” – some gemstones (especially sapphires, emeralds, rubies and diamonds) are considered more valuable than others.

Gemstones by Cut and Polish

Of the more than 2000 natural minerals identified, fewer than 100 are classified as gemstones, and of these, only 16 have gained any importance – and almost none of these are used in their natural state. All have to be cut and polished to enhance their beauty and features.

The two major classifications for cutting stones are as cabochons, which are dome-like, smooth stones (usually done to opaque stones such as opals, turquoise or onyx), and faceted (applied to ‘transparent’ stones, especially the five habitually classified as precious stones), where small ‘windows’ are cut in the stone at planned angles at regular intervals, which shows the stone’s optical properties to best advantage. Reflected light is maximized, being seen by the viewer as the sparkle which ’separates’ the cardinal gems from everyone else. The faceting method is applied to ‘transparent’ gemstones like diamonds, emeralds and rubies.

This is part of the reason why the transparent gemstones like diamonds, rubies emeralds and sapphires are so expensive and valuable – great care and planning go into the cutting of the facets and the polishing of the stones. If the angles are too shallow or too steep – or placed at the wrong intervals – light passing through the stone will not be reflected back to the viewer, and the stone’s quality and value are negated.

Treatments Applied to Gemstones

Gemstones are sometimes subjected to various ‘treatments’ intended to enhance color quality or clarity. Among the standard treatments used are:

-	Heating the stones, mostly aquamarine, sapphires and rubies, in order to improve their color and clarity. Aquamarine, for example, is heat-treated in order to remove yellows in order to bring out a purer blue.

-	Radiation has also been applied to blue topaz, especially the lighter and darker shades to change the white color to an even blue. Some colorless diamonds have turned green, rose quartz turns brown and decolorized amethyst have turned back to their original rich purple. The downside to this treatment is that some color changes are not permanent – and the stone may become radioactive.

-	“Waxing” emeralds and turquoise is a long-standing practice, intended to disguise the natural cracks that many of these stones have. The wax or oil used is often colored so as to enhance the stone’s clarity

Silver is a beautiful and affordable type of jewelry to wear. Since silver is such a soft metal it is often mixed with copper and other fine metals to make it more durable, creating sterling silver. This alloy will be susceptible to tarnishing so it is important to keep your jewelry cleaned to maintain its shiny appearance. Here are some tips on how to care for your favorite rings, necklaces and bracelets.

1.)	Clean your jewelry with a phosphate free detergent

2.)	Use a low abrasive cleaner such as 3M Tarni-Shield Silver Polish

3.)	For extremely tarnished jewelry, it is best to have it cleaned by a professional

4.)	DO NOT use toothpaste as a polish. Many types of toothpaste contain ingredients that are too abrasive and can cause serious damage to your silver. Make sure you use a polish that is made specifically for polishing.

5.)	Clean your jewelry as often as possible to prevent tarnish from developing. Use warm (not hot water) with a gentle phosphate free detergent.

6.)	Avoid using rubber gloves when washing your pieces. Rubber is known to corrode many types of metals used in jewelry.

7.)	When polishing your silver, rub it with a soft polishing cloth in a straight line back and fourth (not in circles). Avoid scrubbing and let the polish do its job.

8.)	Make sure you dry the piece completely after washing it

9.)	Store your silver correctly. There are anti-tarnish silver chests that are lined with treated felt, or an anti tarnish cloth. You can also try a vacuum sealer to pack pieces of cleaned silver in. Food saver bags work very well.

10.) Avoid wearing you silver in swimming pools. Chlorine can cause extensive damage in a short period of time.

The platinum used in platinum engagement rings is much more rare than gold and perhaps this is why it costs 4x as much as yellow gold and 2x as much as white gold. Unlike gold, platinum is used in almost its pure form in jewelry. Platinum’s purity is indicated by a 3 digit number which should be marked on the band. For example, If your band is marked “950 platinum”, the band is 95% pure platinum with alloys constituting 5% of the ring. Most platinum is mined in Russia and South Africa.

Platinum’s silvery-white luster looks beautiful against most gemstones, hence it is increasingly a very popular choice for one’s engagement ring setting. Platinum will feel heavier on one’s finger than other metals.

One of the lesser known facts about platinum is that it is hypo-allergenic and will not irritate your skin. My friend, who recently got married, was complaining to me about her white-gold engagement and wedding bands, which were making her finger itch. As a result, she is only able to wear it every few days and may have to get the inside of it plated in platinum or another metal. What a hassle.

Another positive thing about platinum is that it is low maintenance. Platinum will not rust, tarnish, or require frequent trips to the jewelry repair store. My white-gold engagement ring is not making my finger itch but it lost is luster a number of months ago. When I used some self-tanner, it seemed to erode the plating revealing a yellow gold color underneath. I eventually need to take it in to get it re-rhodium-plated. In other words, I’m a low maintenance girl sportin’ a high maintenance ring.
